General Mills has created some of the more beloved characters in the grocery store.

Did you ever hope that the Trix Rabbit would finally taste theTrix? C'mon. The little guy is more than 40 years old. All those years, in almost every commercial, he was foiled by kids who exclaim, "Silly Rabbit,Trixare for kids!"

The Rabbit has tasted theTrixtwice – in 1976 and 1980, following box top voting campaigns.

Then there's Lucky. He was almost unlucky. Waldo replaced him briefly. In less than a year, Lucky was back in there, pitching nationwide.

General Mills proved that even monsters can be fun at the breakfast table.Count Chocula, Franken BerryandBoo Berrydebuted in the early 1970s, followed byFruit BruteandYummy Mummy.

And what's not to like about a baker? Wendell, the friendly baker, is responsible for cooking up batches ofCinnamon Toast Crunchcereal. He appeared in 1987. His two sidekicks, Bob and Quello, have since retired. Apparently the "too many cooks..." line applies to bakers, too.

One of the world's best-loved advertising icons,Poppin' Fresh,Pillsbury Doughboy, made his first television appearance in 1965. The venerable Doughboy was created with the help of the Leo Burnett advertising agency, and within three years was recognized by 87 percent of Americans.

In 1964, Lucky the Leprechaun brought us the originalLucky Charms, which featured green clovers, pink hearts, orange stars and yellow moon marshmallows, which are called "marbits."

The Green Giant was born in 1925. He got a little makeover in the 1930s, at which time the "Jolly" was added to his name. His first TV appearance was in 1961, when he called out the famous "Ho Ho Ho."

In 1975, twoLucky Charmscereal mascots existed – Waldo in New England and Lucky the Leprechaun in the rest of the U.S. Waldo is now a footnote in cereal mascot history.

What about the "monsters" cereal mascots who rose again? In 1974, Frute Brute and Fruity Yummy Mummy came along, then disappeared. Or so you thought. Like the monsters in those horror flicks, they came back - for a limited time in 2013.
